Metroid is a side-scrolling action game for the NES in which you play as bounty hunter Samus Aran, exploring the underground world of Zebes. Rather than moving stage to stage, you navigate a large interconnected map of tunnels, shafts and chambers, backtracking through areas you have already seen once you find the item that lets you pass an obstacle. Power-ups expand what Samus can do: the Morph Ball rolls her into tight passages, missiles open certain doors and damage tougher enemies, and beam upgrades change how her arm cannon fires. Energy tanks raise your maximum health. Hidden passages and destructible blocks reward careful searching, and passwords let you resume progress. Boss creatures guard sections of the map and must be defeated to advance.
