Pilotwings is a flight game for the Super Nintendo built as a series of training exercises rather than a race or combat title. You take on lessons in light plane flying, skydiving, hang gliding and the rocket belt, each judged on how accurately you follow instructions and land on the target. Scores are awarded for elements such as touchdown accuracy, approach angle and how much of the course you complete, and you need a passing total to earn your licence and unlock the next set of lessons. The game uses the SNES Mode 7 effect to rotate and scale the ground beneath you, giving a sense of altitude and banking from a behind-the-craft view. Later stages add tougher weather and tighter targets, and helicopter missions appear as a change of pace.
