Pokemon Snap is a first-person photography game for the Nintendo 64. You ride an on-rails vehicle through a series of themed environments on an island, including a beach, a cave, a volcano and a river, taking pictures of the wild Pokemon that appear along the route. You cannot leave the track, so play is about timing, looking in the right direction, and using tools such as apples, pester balls and a flute to lure Pokemon, wake them, or trigger new behaviour and interactions. At the end of each course, Professor Oak scores your best shots based on the pose, size, position in frame, and whether other Pokemon are present. Higher scores and discovered secrets unlock further courses and tools, and an album stores your photographs.
