Silpheed on Sega CD is a scrolling shooter that places your fighter craft over pre-rendered polygonal backgrounds, with the camera pulled back at an angle rather than looking straight down. You fly through space stations, canyons and fleets of enemy ships, dodging incoming fire while destroying formations of attackers. Between stages you choose a weapon loadout for your ship, mixing options such as spread shots, forward cannons and rear-facing fire, which encourages tailoring your setup to the enemies ahead. Your shields absorb a limited amount of damage before you are destroyed. The presentation makes heavy use of the CD format, with animated cutscenes, voice communications and a recorded soundtrack framing the missions. Play is short, intense stages capped by larger enemy craft and set-piece encounters.
