Sonic Advance 3 is a 2D platformer for the Game Boy Advance that pairs characters together. You pick a lead character and a partner from a roster that includes Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Cream, and the combination changes your move set, so the same lead plays differently depending on who follows you. Partners can be called on for assisted moves, and some abilities are needed to reach alternate routes. Progress runs through hub areas where you locate the entrances to each act, find Chao hidden in the stages, and take on boss encounters against Dr. Eggman's machines. Chaos Emeralds are earned in special stages accessed from the hubs. Stages emphasise speed and vertical layouts, with springs, loops and grind rails, and cleared acts can be revisited to hunt for anything missed.
