Sonic Advance is a side-scrolling platformer built for the Game Boy Advance. You pick from a group of playable characters, each with different handling and abilities, and run, jump and spin-dash through zones split into acts, collecting rings, freeing animals from badniks and facing Dr. Eggman in boss fights. Level design uses the series' familiar loops, springs, slopes and speed sections, with alternate high and low routes through many stages. Special stages accessed from within levels let you chase the Chaos Emeralds. The character roster changes how stages play: some can hover or climb, others rely on raw speed, which encourages replaying zones with different picks. A small Chao area is included for raising creatures, and multiplayer options allow head-to-head racing with a link cable.
