Sonic Unleashed for the Wii alternates between two forms of play. Daytime stages focus on high-speed running, with boost, drifting and quick-step controls carrying Sonic through obstacle-filled courses that shift between behind-the-back and side-scrolling views. At night Sonic transforms into the Werehog, a stronger and slower form that brawls with enemies using combo attacks and stretching arms, which also let him swing across gaps and climb during platforming sections. Hub areas based on real-world locations connect the stages, where you speak with residents and take on optional objectives. Sonic is joined by Chip after Dr. Eggman shatters the planet. Earned experience is spent on upgrading combat, speed and other abilities for each form. The Wii release supports the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, with motion input used for some Werehog actions.
