Star Fox for the Super Nintendo is a 3D rail shooter powered by the Super FX chip, which lets the console render flat-shaded polygon environments and enemies. You fly Fox McCloud's Arwing through space corridors and planetary surfaces, dodging obstacles, barrel-rolling to deflect fire and shooting down enemy craft before facing a boss at the end of each stage. Wingmen Falco, Peppy and Slippy call out warnings and can be shot down if you ignore their distress calls. Power-ups upgrade your blaster and add smart bombs, and a small shield gauge means sustained hits end the run. Rather than one fixed campaign, the game offers branching route options of differing difficulty from the home base of Corneria toward a confrontation with Andross. Play alternates between on-rails flight and enclosed all-range sections.
