Super Castlevania IV is a side-scrolling action platformer in which you play as Simon Belmont on a journey through Dracula's castle and its surrounding grounds. The whip is central: you can lash in eight directions, hold the button to dangle and waggle the whip defensively, and latch onto ceiling hooks to swing across gaps. Sub-weapons such as the axe, holy water and cross return, powered by hearts collected from candles and enemies. Stages move through swamps, caverns, libraries, clock towers and treasure rooms, each closing with a boss fight against a large creature drawn from gothic horror. The Super Nintendo hardware is used for rotating and scaling rooms, layered backgrounds and a moody orchestral-style soundtrack. Progress relies on learning enemy patterns and careful positioning rather than speed.
