Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo Entertainment System takes a different approach from the original. You choose between Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad before each stage, and each character handles differently: Luigi jumps highest, Toad digs and lifts quickly, and the Princess can float briefly in mid-air. Instead of stomping enemies, you pull vegetables and other objects out of the ground and throw them at foes. Doors, jars, and Magic Potions let you slip into a shadowy Sub-space where you can grab coins and mushrooms that extend your life meter. Levels involve climbing vines, riding moving platforms, hopping across quicksand, and using keys while a pursuing Phanto mask chases you. Bosses include Birdo and Mouser, and the world of Subcon is the setting throughout.
