Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is a side-scrolling action platformer for the Super Nintendo following the events of the film. You fight through locations including the ice fields and caves of Hoth, the swamps of Dagobah and Cloud City, using blasters and a lightsaber against Imperial troops, wildlife and machinery. Luke Skywalker is the main playable character, with Han Solo and Chewbacca available in certain stages, and Luke gains Force abilities that can be assigned and used during play. Weapon pickups upgrade your blaster fire, while health and extra lives are hidden throughout the levels. Vehicle sequences use scaling and rotation effects for segments such as snowspeeder combat and flight through an asteroid field. Boss fights close out major chapters, and enemy density keeps the difficulty high.
