Fire Dogs takes its premise from the Ren and Stimpy episode in which the pair become firefighters. The Super Nintendo version is a licensed action game that moves through stages themed around firehouse duties and burning buildings, mixing platform sections with task-based sequences such as catching falling people and dousing flames. The SNES hardware allows for larger, more colourful sprites than the 8-bit Ren and Stimpy games, and the artwork leans on the cartoon's rubbery character animation and loud sound effects. Stages are short and varied rather than long exploratory levels, and the humour of the show carries through in the visual gags and character reactions. Controls follow standard side-scrolling conventions, with jumping and simple attacks or actions used to clear each scenario.
