Totally Rad is a side-scrolling action platformer in which you play as a young magician fighting through stages of enemies and hazards. Alongside standard punch and jump attacks, you cast spells drawn from a magic meter, giving you ranged and screen-clearing options that must be spent carefully since the meter refills only from pickups. Certain spells transform your character into different forms with their own attacks and movement abilities, which you can switch between to handle particular enemies and obstacles. Stages move through varied environments and close with boss fights against larger foes. The North American release is dressed up with slang-heavy dialogue in the cutscenes that frame the story between levels. Movement is straightforward, with the emphasis on managing magic reserves as you advance.
