Toxic Crusaders on the Nintendo Entertainment System is a side-scrolling action game based on the animated series spun off from Troma's Toxic Avenger. You play as Toxie, the mop-wielding mutant hero, fighting through polluted city streets and industrial areas against henchmen, mutants and hazards. Combat centres on melee swings with the mop, with jumping and platforming between encounters, and pickups scattered through the stages to restore health. Each level ends in a confrontation with a larger enemy. The presentation leans on the cartoon's grimy environmental theme and exaggerated character designs, with sprite work drawn from the show's cast. It is a fairly straightforward action-platformer built around learning enemy patterns and managing your health bar across the length of each stage.
