True Crime: New York City is an open-world action game in which you play as Marcus Reed, a former criminal working as an NYPD officer. The city is modelled on Manhattan, with street layouts, subway entrances and neighbourhoods you can drive or walk through freely between story missions. Police work forms much of the moment-to-moment play: you can stop crimes in progress, frisk suspects, flash your badge, make arrests or open fire, and your conduct affects how the game rates you. Combat mixes gunplay with hand-to-hand fighting, and you can buy weapons, clothing and upgrades as you progress. Vehicles are taken and driven at will, with chases and shooting from behind the wheel. The story unfolds through cutscenes as Reed investigates corruption and organised crime.
