Ultima Quest of the Avatar is the Nintendo Entertainment System conversion of the fourth Ultima role-playing game. Rather than chasing a villain, the goal is to become the Avatar by embodying eight virtues, which means your choices and conduct across the world are tracked and matter to your progress. You explore Britannia from an overhead view, talk to townspeople through a keyword-based conversation system, recruit companions, and fight turn-based battles on a separate combat screen. Dungeons are shown in a first-person perspective, and much of the game involves gathering runes, mantras and clues needed to complete the quest. Character growth comes through combat, exploration and virtuous acts. Progress is saved with battery-backed memory. The design rewards mapping, note-taking and paying attention to what people tell you.
