Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego moves the detective series from geography to history on the NES. Instead of flying between cities, you travel between eras, following a suspect who has been stealing items and objects from the past. Witnesses at each stop offer clues tied to historical figures, events and inventions, and you use those hints to choose the correct time period for your next jump. As you go you gather a description of the thief and enter the details into a database to secure an arrest warrant. Cases are timed, so incorrect jumps cost you progress. The clues assume you will reason about when things happened, making history knowledge, or a willingness to look things up, part of the play.
