Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is the opening scenario of the Wizardry role-playing series, converted for the NES. You create a party of adventurers from a roster of races and classes, including fighters, mages, priests and thieves, then send them beneath the town into a multi-level maze in search of treasure and the source of its troubles. The dungeon is explored in first person on a square grid, with steps and turns taken one at a time past traps, spinners, teleporters and hidden doors. Battles are turn-based and resolved through menus, with positioning in the marching order determining who can strike and who casts spells. Between expeditions you return to town to heal, buy and identify gear, and revive dead characters. Careful mapping and cautious resource use are the core of play.
