Tetris 2 on the NES changes the rules of the original into a colour-matching puzzle game. Pieces still fall into a well, but blocks now come in colours, and the playfield starts seeded with fixed blocks. Instead of completing horizontal rows, you clear by lining up three or more blocks of the same colour horizontally or vertically, which can trigger chain reactions as loose pieces settle and match again. Pieces can break apart when part of them is cleared, so the stack shifts in ways the original never did. Stages are cleared by removing the special flashing blocks placed in the field, then moving on to a harder arrangement. There is a single-player run through increasingly crowded boards and a two-player competitive option on one screen.
