The Goonies II is an action-adventure game for the NES in which you play as Mikey, searching for the kidnapped Goonies and a captive mermaid named Annie. The game alternates between side-scrolling exploration of a large interconnected map and first-person rooms where you examine walls, talk to characters and search for hidden items and passages. Progress depends on finding tools and equipment such as weapons, a hammer for breaking walls, and gear that lets you survive underwater or resist cold, each opening up areas that were previously out of reach. There is no linear route through the map, so you backtrack constantly as new abilities become available. Enemies patrol the corridors and caves, and hidden doors are often only found by striking the right surface.
