Advance Wars is a turn-based strategy game for the Game Boy Advance. You command an army on grid-based maps, moving infantry, tanks, artillery, aircraft and naval units, capturing cities and factories for funding and building reinforcements from your bases. Terrain affects movement and defence, unit matchups matter, and capturing the enemy headquarters or wiping out their forces wins the battle. Each commanding officer has their own strengths and a special power that can be triggered once charged, which changes how you approach a fight. The game includes a story campaign that introduces mechanics gradually, standalone battle maps, a War Room mode scored on efficiency and speed, and multiplayer on a single cartridge with players passing the system between turns. Presentation uses bright cartoon-style sprites and animated combat cutaways.
