Altered Beast: Guardian of the Realms is a side-scrolling action game for the Game Boy Advance, built around the transformation idea the series is known for. You fight through stages on a mostly two-dimensional plane, taking on waves of monstrous enemies with melee attacks, and can change into beast forms that bring their own moves and abilities. Managing when to transform, and making use of the powers each form provides, is central to clearing tougher enemies and bosses. Stages are set across varied environments and end in boss encounters, with items and power-ups found along the way. The presentation uses detailed sprite work and scaled-down mythological horror imagery suited to the handheld. Play is single-player, with progress saved to the cartridge rather than requiring a run in one sitting.
