The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning on Game Boy Advance is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer based on the console game of the same name. You control Spyro, a young purple dragon learning to use his abilities as he uncovers his past. Play centres on melee attacks and elemental breath powers, which you switch between to fight enemies and deal with obstacles. Spyro can jump, glide and charge, and stages include platforming sections, enemy encounters and boss fights. Gems collected along the way go toward strengthening his attacks and abilities. Sparx the dragonfly accompanies Spyro as in the console versions. The story is told through still artwork and text between levels, and the handheld version condenses the plot and settings of the larger release into a hand-drawn sprite-based presentation.
