Madagascar for Game Boy Advance is a side-scrolling action platformer based on the animated film. You take control of the film's animals, including Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, with levels handing you different characters and using their individual abilities to run, jump, climb and deal with obstacles. Stages follow the story's path from the city zoo to the island, filled with hazards, collectibles to gather and simple enemies to avoid or knock aside. Some sections break from straight platforming for chase or minigame-style challenges. Controls are kept straightforward, with movement, jumping and a basic attack or special move, and progress is made by reaching the end of each stage.
