Mario Party Advance adapts the party series to the Game Boy Advance with a design built around single-player progression rather than four-player board play. You choose a character and move around a map, taking on quests and events for the characters you meet, unlocking minigames and items as you go. Because the handheld has one screen and one set of buttons, minigames are short, single-player challenges based on timing, reflexes and simple puzzles, with results stored so you can revisit them later. Collected minigames and novelty items can be viewed and replayed from a separate menu. Multiplayer options are limited compared with the console entries, reflecting the hardware's link cable setup. The presentation uses sprite art and the familiar Mario cast, and sessions are structured for shorter handheld play.
