Riviera: The Promised Land is a role-playing game built around menu-driven exploration rather than free movement. You guide Ein, an angel sent to the land of Riviera, moving between fixed locations and using a "Look" command to examine scenery, which can turn up items, hidden paths, or sudden battle encounters. Poking around costs Trigger Points, a limited resource that also gates practice battles, so exploration involves deciding what is worth investigating. Combat is turn-based and fought with a small selection of equipped items and weapons, each with a limited number of uses that determine which attacks and skills are available. Story scenes are presented with character portraits and branching choices, and your interactions with your party members influence how events play out. The presentation uses hand-drawn 2D art throughout.
