This Game Boy Advance release is a tie-in with the SpongeBob SquarePants feature film. It plays as a side-scrolling action platformer, with SpongeBob running, jumping and attacking his way through stages drawn from the film's journey out of Bikini Bottom. You use jump attacks and melee moves to deal with enemies and hazards, gather items scattered through the levels, and work toward the exit of each stage. Patrick joins the adventure, and the game breaks up the platforming with occasional alternate challenges and boss encounters. Presentation uses bright 2D sprite art and settings modelled on the cartoon, with cutscene text carrying the story between levels. Controls are kept simple, so the focus is on straightforward platform navigation and light combat rather than complex systems.
