Tokyo Xtreme Racer Advance brings the series' highway duelling format to the Game Boy Advance. Instead of lap races, you cruise the expressway looking for rival drivers, flash your lights to start a challenge, and then fight a one-on-one battle decided by a meter that drains when you fall behind or make mistakes. Empty the rival's meter and you win; empty yours and the run is over. Between battles you spend winnings in the garage, buying engine, drivetrain, tyre and aerodynamic upgrades, and tuning settings to suit your driving. Beating opponents unlocks tougher rivals and new cars to acquire. The road is presented from a behind-the-car view with traffic to weave through, and progress is measured by working your way through the ranks of drivers who haunt the highway.
