A side-scrolling action platformer for the Game Boy starring Christopher Belmont, who makes his way through a set of stages toward a confrontation with Dracula. The whip can be upgraded by collecting crystals, gaining reach and then a fireball-style shot, but taking damage downgrades it again, so protecting your weapon level becomes part of the challenge. Stages include climbing sections with ropes, spiked hazards, collapsing floors and rising or falling obstacles that demand careful timing. Movement is slower and more deliberate than in later handheld entries, and jumps cannot be adjusted in mid-air. Each stage closes with a boss fight. Hidden items and money bags are tucked into walls and candles for players who search the environments as they go.
