A Game Boy platformer starring Christopher Belmont, following the handheld Castlevania that preceded it. Play is linear and stage-based: you move right, whip skeletons, bats and other undead, and use sub-weapons found in candles and breakable blocks. From a map screen you choose the order in which to tackle four castles, each ending in a boss fight, before the final stretch opens up. Your whip can be upgraded and is lost again if you take too much damage, and some sections use the whip to swing between hooks placed over gaps. Stage design mixes careful jumping with enemy placement that punishes rushing. The monochrome presentation is accompanied by a chiptune score in the series' Gothic style.
