Wario Land II is a platform game for the Game Boy in which Wario sets out after his castle is robbed. Unlike most platformers of the era, Wario cannot die from enemy contact and has no life meter. Instead, hits change his condition: he can be squashed flat, set on fire, puffed up, turned into a spring or transformed into a zombie, and each state has movement properties you need to solve the level's obstacles. Much of the game involves seeking out the right hazard deliberately to open a route. Stages hide coins and treasures, and the map branches at certain points, so different play routes lead to different chapters and endings. The presentation is monochrome sprite work with side-scrolling levels and boss encounters.
