Sonic Colors sends Sonic and Tails to an interstellar amusement park that Dr. Eggman has built above a series of themed worlds. Each world is broken into several acts, and stages shift between full 3D running sections and 2D side-on platforming, often within the same level. The hook is the Wisps: captured alien creatures that Sonic can absorb for temporary abilities, such as drilling through terrain, becoming a laser that ricochets off surfaces, or hovering as a floating spike ball. Different Wisps open alternate routes, so stages reward exploring rather than simply holding forward. Boost, homing attacks and grind rails handle the rest of the movement. Cutscenes between worlds carry the story, and a split-screen mode lets a second player join in for Wisp-based races on the Wii.
