Legend of the Mystical Ninja is the Super Nintendo entry in Konami's Goemon series, and the first to reach Western audiences. You play as Goemon, a pipe-wielding thief in a comic version of feudal Japan, and can be joined by the rotund Ebisumaru in simultaneous two-player co-op. Stages alternate between open town areas, where you talk to residents, buy items and armour, and play mini-games in shops and gambling parlours, and side-scrolling action levels that end in boss fights. Combat relies on melee swings and thrown coins, with power-ups that upgrade your weapon and extend your reach. The tone is deliberately silly, full of cats, ghosts, dancing girls and slapstick enemies, backed by an upbeat soundtrack. Passwords let you return to later stages.
