Super Adventure Island II is a side-scrolling platformer for the Super Nintendo that adds role-playing structure to the Adventure Island formula. You control Master Higgins as he travels between islands on an overworld map, exploring stages that can be revisited rather than simply cleared in sequence. Along the way you find swords, shields, armour and other equipment that change your reach and durability, along with items needed to reach previously blocked areas. Progress depends on backtracking with new tools as much as on jumping and combat skill, and there are people to talk to and puzzles to work through between fights. Bosses guard key locations, and the game tracks your progress with saving rather than expecting a single continuous run. The result plays closer to an exploration-driven adventure than the earlier games in the series.
