Secret of the Stars is a turn-based role-playing game for the Super Nintendo. You guide a party of characters across an overworld, visiting towns to buy equipment and gather information, then exploring caves, towers and dungeons where random encounters break out. Combat is menu-driven, with attack, magic, item and defend options, and victories bring experience points, gold and gradual level growth. A distinguishing element is the use of two separate groups of heroes, the main party and a smaller secondary team, which you can switch between as the story progresses; each group levels independently and handles certain parts of the adventure. The presentation uses top-down maps and sprite-based battle screens in the style of console RPGs of its era.
