Top Gun: The Second Mission puts you back in the cockpit of a fighter jet for a series of air combat sorties viewed from a first-person perspective. You track enemy aircraft on radar, close the distance, and switch between machine guns and missiles as targets come into view. Between engagements you handle the tasks that made the original notorious, including mid-air refueling from a tanker and landing back on the carrier deck, both of which require lining up carefully and matching speed. Missions vary the objectives and enemy types, and later stages introduce additional flight challenges. The presentation leans on the film's setting, with briefing screens framing each sortie. Control is handled entirely with the D-pad and two buttons, keeping throttle, weapon selection, and maneuvering simple to reach during combat.
