Xevious is a vertically scrolling shooter converted from the arcade for the Nintendo Entertainment System. You fly the Solvalou craft over a continuous landscape of forests, rivers and installations, facing threats in two separate planes at once. Your air-to-air shot handles flying enemies, while a separate bomb sight lets you drop ordnance on ground targets such as tanks, gun emplacements and hidden structures buried in the terrain. Managing both weapon types simultaneously is the core of the game, since ground fire can destroy you just as easily as anything in the air. Enemy formations arrive in set patterns, so learning routes and knowing when to bomb is central to progressing. The presentation is spare, with a single continuous stage flow and simple two-button controls suited to short, repeated attempts.
