Arx Fatalis is a first-person role-playing game set in an underground world, where the surface has become uninhabitable and the remaining races live in a network of caverns and tunnels. You explore these interconnected levels, talk to inhabitants, take on quests and fight in real-time first-person combat. Its most distinctive system is spellcasting: instead of picking spells from a list, you draw runes in the air with the cursor, combining collected runes into sequences to produce different magical effects. Character progression lets you invest in combat, stealth and magical skills, and the world supports hands-on interaction such as cooking food, forging items and using objects found in the environment. The Xbox release adapts the mouse-driven interface to the controller. Exploration is largely non-linear, with dark passages, locked areas and hidden routes to uncover.
