Halo: Combat Evolved is a first-person shooter for the original Xbox. You play as Master Chief, a armoured super-soldier who arrives at a vast ring-shaped world called Halo after fleeing a human colony under attack, and fights the alien alliance known as the Covenant alongside surviving marines. Combat is built around a recharging energy shield, a two-weapon limit, grenades and melee strikes, encouraging you to swap weapons picked up from enemies. Levels mix wide outdoor areas with vehicle sections, including the drivable Warthog and Ghost, and interior corridor fighting. The campaign can be played co-operatively in split screen, and multiplayer supports split-screen matches and System Link play between consoles, with modes such as deathmatch and capture the flag across a set of arena maps.
