Blades of Steel is Konami's arcade-style ice hockey game for the NES. The action is viewed from an overhead angle that scrolls along the rink, and play is fast and simplified rather than a full simulation: you pass, skate into position and shoot, then switch to checking and blocking when the other team has the puck. Body checks can trigger one-on-one fistfights, with the loser sent off, and penalty shots are played out in a close-up view where you aim against the goalie. You can play against the computer or against a second player, choosing from city-named teams and adjusting difficulty. The digitized crowd and announcer samples and the between-period shooting mini-game are part of the package.
