Karate Champ is a one-on-one karate fighting game brought to the NES from the arcade. Two fighters in gi face each other on a flat plane while a referee calls each exchange, awarding a full or half point for a clean strike; win enough points and you take the bout. The move set is built from kicks, punches and sweeps performed at different heights, executed through directional inputs combined with the buttons, so positioning and spacing matter more than long combos. Matches take place against a series of opponents in different outdoor backdrops, and bonus rounds break up the fighting with timed challenges. You can play against the computer or against a second player. The pacing is deliberate, with rounds often decided by a single well-timed strike rather than extended trading of blows.
