Wayne Gretzky Hockey is an ice hockey game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, licensed around the hockey star's name. You control a team on a scrolling rink view, passing, shooting, checking and taking faceoffs across periods of play, with goaltending handled as you switch to the defending skater nearest the puck. Play is built on the standard flow of hockey: winning possession, moving the puck up ice, working for a shooting lane and defending your own zone. Penalties and stoppages break up the action in the usual way. Games can be played against the computer or with a second player for head-to-head matches. It is a straightforward console hockey title from the NES era rather than a deep statistical simulation.
