Wurm: Journey to the Center of the Earth is an action game for the NES that mixes several styles of play into one adventure beneath the surface. You control a burrowing vehicle that can shift between forms, using it to tunnel through underground caverns while fighting the creatures that live there. Much of the game is side-scrolling action, with your craft firing on enemies and navigating hazards, but it breaks away for first-person sections and on-foot segments where you leave the vehicle behind. Story scenes with character portraits and dialogue link the stages together, laying out the expedition and the discoveries made as you descend. The result is an NES title that moves between shooting, exploration and narrative sequences rather than sticking to a single format throughout.
