Pokemon Gold takes place in the Johto region, where you start with Chikorita, Cyndaquil or Totodile and travel between towns collecting Gym Badges. The game introduces 100 new Pokemon, along with the Dark and Steel types, held items, Pokemon breeding with eggs, and the Special stat split into Special Attack and Special Defense. An internal clock gives day and night cycles plus days of the week, which affect which Pokemon appear and which events occur. A radio and mobile phone system lets you rematch trainers and hear about swarms. After the Johto story, you can travel to Kanto and challenge its Gyms as well. Ho-Oh appears on the box art and can be encountered in this version's story.
