Cliffhanger is a side-scrolling action game for the Game Boy based on the mountain-rescue action film. You control a climber making his way through snowy peaks, caves and mountain structures, fighting off armed criminals along the way. Play mixes platforming with close-quarters combat, using punches and kicks against enemies while climbing, jumping and navigating hazards such as gaps, falling objects and icy terrain. Levels move mostly left to right with vertical climbing sections, and health is limited, so avoiding damage matters as much as clearing enemies. The monochrome presentation uses detailed sprite work for the mountain settings, and short between-stage screens tie the action to the film's plot. It is a straightforward, linear action-platformer of the kind commonly produced for handheld movie tie-ins.
