Black Hole Assault is a one-on-one fighting game for the Sega CD in which the combatants are large armored mechs rather than human martial artists. You pick a machine and face opponents in single bouts, using punches, kicks, throws and ranged weapons across a two-dimensional plane, with rounds decided by draining the other mech's energy. The fighters are heavy and deliberate, so spacing and timing matter more than fast chains of attacks. Making use of the CD format, the game frames its matches with animated cutscenes and voiced sequences that set up the conflict between the pilots, along with a redbook audio soundtrack. Play includes a single-player run through the roster and head-to-head matches against a second player.
