Samurai Shodown on Sega CD is a home conversion of SNK's weapon-based one-on-one fighting game. Instead of trading punches and kicks, fighters swing swords, blades and other armaments, and clean hits land for heavy damage, which makes spacing and timing central to matches. The roster includes wandering swordsman Haohmaru, the Ainu priestess Nakoruru with her hawk, French fencer Charlotte, and other duelists from feudal-era Japan and beyond. Weapon clashes can knock arms out of a fighter's hands, leaving them scrambling to recover while defending bare-handed. Modes cover a single-player run through the roster toward the final opponent and two-player versus matches. The CD format is used for the audio presentation alongside the game's stage backdrops and between-round story panels.
