Shadow of the Beast II brings the side-scrolling action-adventure series to Sega CD, adapted from its home computer original. You control a hulking transformed protagonist making his way through interconnected outdoor and underground areas, fighting off creatures with melee attacks and thrown or found weapons. Progress depends as much on exploration as on combat: you collect and use items, hand over objects to characters you meet, and work out which route or object opens the way forward, so backtracking through areas you have already cleared is part of the design. Enemy contact drains a life bar, and hazards are placed to punish careless movement. The Sega CD version makes use of the format's audio capability for its soundtrack, and the visuals keep the detailed, hand-drawn creature and background art the series is known for.
