Sonic CD is a 2D platformer for the Sega CD in which time travel is built into the level design. Each zone has past, present, good future and bad future versions. By touching a signpost marked Past or Future and then holding top speed long enough, you jump to that time period. Travelling to the past and destroying Dr. Robotnik's machine hidden in the stage, or finding and smashing the metal flowers, changes the future of that zone for the better. Amy Rose appears and is kidnapped, and Metal Sonic features in a race sequence. Special stages are 3D arenas where you chase down UFOs to claim Time Stones. The CD format allows a recorded soundtrack and animated opening and ending sequences.
