Ace Combat 4 is an arcade flight combat game set in the series' fictional Strangereal world, where an invasion sparks a war fought largely in the air. You fly as a squadron leader through a campaign of missions that include dogfights, strikes on ground and naval targets, canyon runs and assaults on heavily defended installations. Between sorties you spend earned credits on new aircraft and choose special weapon loadouts such as long-range missiles, bombs and rockets. The story is told partly through briefings and partly through narrated interludes from the perspective of a boy living near an enemy air base, which frames the enemy ace squadron you repeatedly encounter. Flight handling is accessible rather than simulation-based, with cockpit and external views, radar and a full orchestral and rock soundtrack.
